Reflections on "The Future is Now"
In many ways, my new album The Future is Now, was born in the final stages of my last album (Where I Belong), whilst sitting in the mastering studio. The final part of music production is what's called mastering, where the mastering engineer equalises all the frequencies and makes sure the volumes from track to track are balanced. The mastering engineer was flicking from track to track, listening to how the songs sit together as a whole. A bit like flicking TV channels on the remote, only you get an array of sounds instead of images.
Listening to all these snippets of random words and phrases jumping out from the different songs. a picture began building in my mind. All these words and phrases were of a spiritual nature. All of a sudden it struck me like lightening. I've created a wall! Anyone who is not on the "spiritual path" so to speak, would not know what I’m talking about!
Whilst I may be being a bit harsh on “Where I Belong”, in that moment all I wanted to do was grab an electric guitar and strike an almighty power chord to obliterate that wall I’d created. I wanted to speak in a language that didn’t shut anyone out. In many ways, this current album, The Future is Now, was born of that desire to create music that would be more accessible. Music that is not just for the “spiritual” crowd.
In saying that, I cannot escape the fact that for me, to live in a way that honours the remembrance of truth is important. Truth being the nature of reality, the ground of being, the mysterious fabric of who we are and all that is. It’s become my why, and pointing towards this feels like the greatest contribution I can make at this time. So yes - I’ve come to accept the fact that this continued return to truth will somehow find it’s way into the music in one way or another, no matter what musical language I choose to speak in.
Whilst the previous album “Where I Belong” was created from living in a deep place of surrender, allowing the music to come to me, the new album allowed everything. Creating from places of reactivity or places of pure play, creating to cultivate moods or to inspire action, creating to express, heal or bring understanding to my unknown feelings.. I chose to honour it all and hope that you'll find doors for new possibilities to enter, no matter who you are. Some of it can even be danced to, stomped to, possibly even howled to. That part is not up to me.
I hope it moves you somehow.
The newest songs on the album have a sense of tapping into the collective consciousness at this time, as cracks and ravines are revealed and new futures are being dreamt into existence. Whilst a pandemic gives us reason to call this time “an historic time”, you could argue that every moment is an historic time, equally important and pivotal in the creation of every other moment. History and the Future is, and always has been undeniably…. Now.
So here it is. My latest music baby, The Future is Now. You can pre-order your digital copy via Bandcamp and download 3 songs today before it’s official release on December 3rd. It’s an eclectic mix of songs and sounds and I sincerely hope that you will find something that speaks to you. My favourite comment so far, is that the trees are going to hug me for this one. I’ll let you know if that happens!
The future is now, so let’s embrace it with all the love we can muster within our fragile and powerful human capacity. The bliss of being, paradoxically includes all the suffering of life here on Earth. So keep feeling all you’re feeling and stay loving and true to who you are at the core of you.
If the music moves you and you’d like to share that with me, please feel free to send me a message. I’d love to hear from you. I also hope you'll feel free to spread the love and share it with anyone else you think may appreciate it :) Thankyou for your support.
