Are you Selling your Soul?
I was talking to someone about what it means to “sell your soul”. Reflecting on the conversation afterwards, I thought, if selling my soul is not being true to myself, how exactly am I selling my soul right now? The first answer that came to mind surprised me. It was actually the act of not doing something. When we with-hold something, it can affect our life-force in a way that contracts. When we give, our energy expands and our life-force flows freely. In working with the voice, I’ve also recognised that not being true to ourselves is often a case of what we don't say or express rather than what we do say or express. Often we fear saying what we truly want to say, because we fear the other’s reaction. If we have a pattern of taking responsibility for other’s emotions, then yes, this is troublesome. Don’t rock the boat if you want to live in peace. Taking responsibility for others emotions is often learnt in childhood as a survival mechanism, but this can be changed.
Other reasons why we don't express ourselves can be linked to difficulties accessing the truth of how we feel. It’s just a confusing mass which cannot be verbalised. Whilst it may not be wise or appropriate to speak freely and directly at all times, connection to our intuitive wisdom helps us respond appropriately to whatever is called for in the moment. Listening and silence are also essential elements in communication. Another piece of this puzzle relates to what we know or believe about ourselves. Too often we’re carrying around what we’ve been told in the past by someone else as truth. Healing the past can help us connect to the place within that knows our inherent goodness. We develop compassion for ourselves and others and begin to trust that our voice is coming from love. Having a strong sense that what we express comes from love, means we are less likely to take others reactions or comments personally. We simply get on with being ourselves and giving what we have to offer.
I often write music to distil the learning of the things I wish to remember. The idea of staying true and connected to the heart was the inspiration for my latest song. It is also a call out to others who struggle with believing in the value of what they have to offer and are somehow selling themselves short by not sharing it with others. The song is coming out on my new album and is now up on my music page for an exclusive listen. It doesn't have a title yet. What title would you give this song? I’m curious!
