Action or Activity?
I began designing a flyer and stopped with the first word BE in the middle of the page. I didn't want to add on any more. Staring at this word filled me with a deep sense of relaxation. I began taking in longer breaths. Then it occurred to me that not everyone will feel the same way looking at this little word floating in empty space.
How does it make you feel?
Space can feel terrifying for some people, whether it's some space in a conversation or a period of time left alone. We reach for our phone, something to eat, or get busy on a list of to do's. Many of us lead very busy lives with little down time. Just ask a new parent! The question is, if you DO have time and space, are you able to stop and allow yourself to simply be?
The difference between action and activity
If you identify with having to keep busy all the time, you may wish to explore the distinction between action and activity. In a nutshell, I would say it's all about the quality of the doing.
Here's an example. Eating when you are hungry is action. Eating when you are not hungry is activity. You may begin to see what I'm getting at. In the latter case, the activity has that feeling of avoidance, restlessness or discomfort; the need to distract yourself from what may arise if you stopped "doing". On the other hand, action is not about filling up space with doing, or doing from a place of habit. Action is connected to something deeper within us. We can be moved to act, sometimes without knowing why. It is more an inspired, intuitive, creative response and often has the whole of our being behind it.
Awareness is the key for change. You can ask the question, "What do I really need to do right now that will benefit me on all levels?" Breathe deeply and see if you can take action on your intuitive response to that question.

Learning how to relax
I often see people in my practice who wish to be able to relax and switch off at night. "If I relax, then how will I survive?" seems to be the cry from the subconscious. We may not even realise that this belief is at work behind the scenes. It's good to know that we don't have to get stuck in this survival mode. Kinesiology is great for these issues.
When you allow yourself to be, breathe and relax for a moment your whole perspective can change in that moment. Taking 5 mins here and there during your day can actually help you be more focused to complete tasks. You get to be the eagle for a moment, soaring above the landscape. Obtaining a broader perspective will help you avoid burning rubber and getting bogged down in non-essentials. Sit down with a cup of tea, consciously breathe to re-connect, step outside into the open air or do some gentle stretching.
Smile.
We are not always able to change the tasks required of us in life, but you can always change how you do them. For those of you trapped in a whirlwind of activity to avoid the abyss of space, why not try introducing new types of activities? Activities that result in feeling more peaceful, inspired or fulfilled somehow. Can you relax and listen to some beautiful music instead of watching TV? Get creative?
Rest and "being" is highly undervalued in our society, yet beneficial for our overall health and a balanced life. As we work towards sustainable solutions for a healthy planet, it's good to remember we are helping the cause by beginning with ourselves.
